The concept of a museum named George Lucas Museum is unveiled.
MAD has now revealed the design of a building, which is going to represent a history of the moving image. For that it will use Lucas’ new additions and existing collection. Studio Gang is creating the landscaping for the site is creating by Studio Gang. Studio Gang also creating new bridge which will connect the nearby Northerly Island peninsula to the museum. The bridge has not been made public to be used yet.
The extremities of the curving white stone building extend into the landscape that creates platform above the main entrance of the project. At the highest of the building point, a “floating” disc is covering a flat top, which forms a sheltered viewing area. The area offers visitors vistas of Lake Michigan and Chicago.
According to the designers of George Lucas Museum, space for slivers of glazing provided by slices cut out of the facade, while “infinite loops” is formed by three levels of exhibition spaces inside. There is a large and open lobby area inside the George Lucas Museum entrance which is described as “urban living room”. The lobby area is lit by a central skylight.
In a statement the team said that the design of the George Lucas Museum is both timeless and futuristic. The line between landscape and structure is blurred by its undulating organic surface. Rising up of the harbour to the land, it merges with the stone surfaces that can reach up to the sky and crescendo into the ‘floating’ disc.”
A site near Chicago’s some existing institutions will be occupied by the museum on a stretch of land and it has known as Museum Campus. As the design of Studio Gang, the new building will be connected to the park the firm that created on Northerly Island.
Ma Yansong, founder of MAD , currently working on projects include a complex of buildings in the city Beijing. It meant emulating classical Chinese landscape paintings forms. He said that he wanted to make the George Lucas Museum building seems like a “wave” as it is coming out of the surface.
“The green spaces, public parks are great assets for Chicago and I want our George Lucas Museum building to blend into this fresh environment, so you don’t need to tell where the building is or where the park is,” he added. He further said that we will see the building as a fascinating landscape in front of all the modern skyscrapers.”
“Our museum is not situated in the city or not actually in the downtown area. The museum is on the edge of artificial and nature. Hence I was thinking, maybe our unique architecture is able to bring the nature force, such as water waves.”
VOA Associates, a Chicago-based studio will act as executive architect for implementing MAD’s design.
“We are actually bringing together some top architects from whole world to ensure that our George Lucas museum experience should begins long before tourists ever enter to the building,” according to George Lucas. This statement was published in July when the names of the architects for the museum project were announced. He also said that he was thrilled with the vision of architectural team for the building and also the surrounding green space.”
